“Ball chain” and “bead chain” are typically used interchangeably. It’s a series of round metal balls connected by short rods, creating a flexible chain used for pulls, tags, jewelry, and more.

Ball chain size refers to the bead diameter. Approximate references:
#2 ≈ 1.8 mm
#3 ≈ 2.4 mm (≈ 3/32")
#6 ≈ 3.2 mm (≈ 1/8")
#10 ≈ 4.5 mm (≈ 3/16")
Use calipers to measure a single bead for best accuracy.
Dog tags: #3 stainless; typical sets use a 24" main chain plus a 4.5" short chain.
Keychains/ID badges: #3 for standard items; #6 for heavier items.
Match sizes one-to-one: #3 chain with #3 connector, #6 with #6, etc. Mixing sizes will not lock correctly. Use same-size couplings/joiners for endless loops.
Cut between balls using flush cutters. To form a loop, insert the last ball of each end into a matching-size connector. For continuous loops, use a same-size joiner/coupling or a dedicated joining tool.
Stainless steel (304/316): Best corrosion resistance and strength; low maintenance.
Nickel-plated steel: Economical; good indoors; not ideal for prolonged moisture.
Brass (raw or plated): Good indoor corrosion resistance with a warm, decorative look.
Choose stainless steel for showers, marine settings, or outdoor use. Brass is generally fine indoors. Nickel-plated steel can corrode over time in wet conditions.

#6 (≈ 3.2 mm) is a popular, sturdy choice for pulls. #3 works for light decorative extenders. Always use a matching-size connector.
Most modern clutches use #10 (≈ 4.5 mm); some use #6 (≈ 3.2 mm). Check the clutch manufacturer’s spec. Install a compliant tensioner for child safety.
EDP finishes are durable for normal use. Avoid abrasives and harsh chemicals. Expect normal finish wear in high-friction applications like pocket keychains.
Strength varies by material, size, and manufacturer. Larger and stainless chains are generally stronger. Ball chain is not rated for lifting or life-safety. Consult product spec sheets for application limits.
Yes. Use #2–#3 for delicate looks and #3–#6 for chunkier styles. Choose stainless or brass if you are sensitive to nickel. Match the clasp/connector to the chain size.
Common spools: 100, 250, 500, 1,000, and 2,500 ft. Pre-cut options often include 4" to 36"+ (e.g., 6", 12", 24", 30"). Custom lengths are typically available.
#3 (~2.4 mm): Dog tags, ID, lightweight pulls.
#6 (~3.2 mm): Ceiling/light pulls, heavier keychains, décor.
#10 (~4.5 mm): Window shade clutches, heavy-duty pulls, industrial.
Many chains are manufactured without lead and can meet RoHS/REACH requirements. For CA Prop 65 and other declarations, request current material and compliance documentation for the exact item.
Yes. Most suppliers provide custom cuts, volume pricing, and expedited shipping. Share your size, finish, and length needs for a tailored quote.
